The aim of the Circle for Teachers is to equip educators with an effective problem-solving approach to teaching mathematics.
This style of learning is based on the math circle environment that has proven to be successful for students around the world.
The program will immerse a group of interested elementary, middle, and high school math teachers in engaging mathematics and expose them
to a dynamic style of classroom presentation. Participants will come away with a variety of resources, lesson modules, and
a renewed sense of appreciation for the fascinating world of mathematics. Teachers will also be eligible for continuing education
credit, professional development units or college course credits.
| A major theme throughout the program will be creatively answering the question of how to incorporate a
problem-solving approach to math education into the existing curriculum. To this end, leaders will supply participants with handouts
or short modules based on the material covered during their sessions. They will also work with teachers to share ideas for enlivening
any math class and to develop lesson plans. Focused discussions will be held regularly to determine what obstacles exist to incorporating
this style of teaching into the present curriculum, what resources would be most helpful to teachers, and other related topics. |
Summer Workshop- June 18- June 22, 2012
Click Here for more information! Click Here to Apply!
The Summer workshop supports teachers in their development of problem solving skills as well as the incorporation of problem solving into
their school’s curriculum. During the earlier part of the week teachers will gain experience with a variety of problem solving techniques
such as symmetry, mathematical patterns, and parity. Subsequent sessions will focus on particular topics such as geometry, sequences,
counting, and number theory. Traditionally relegated to the high school curriculum or beyond, these topics actually provide a natural
starting point for exploring and appreciating interesting mathematics at the middle school level. All the sessions will be led by exceptional
educators and mathematicians from the San Francisco Bay area. The participants will be provided with housing, supplies, and meals for each day
of the workshop they attend. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come first-served basis beginning February 28, 2011 and spaces will fill
up fast, so please apply early!
For 2011 Workshop there will be two parallel sessions: one for elementary teachers and one for secondary teachers.
Math Circles
The San Francisco and Oakland/East Bay Math Circles are weekly enrichment programs for students and their teachers, grades 6-12, centered on intriguing and challenging mathematical problems. San Francisco Math Circle (SFMC) meets on Mondays at San Francisco State University (SFSU); the Oakland/ East Bay Math Circle (OEBMC) also meets on Mondays at Laney College in Oakland.
2011 Circle for Teachers participants are expected to attend corresponding Math Circles throughout the 11-12 academic year. Teachers who
bring students to the math circle sessions receive an honorarium for each session attended.
WINTER Workshop- SATURDAY January 28, 2012
The Winter workshop supports teachers in their development of problem solving skills as well as sharing with them information about
upcoming mathematical opportunities for students and teachers. This will be a great opportunity for teachers new to the Math Circle program and
experienced Math Circle teachers.
